David's plan to get back at Lucas by giving him an "F" on his report card was a bad strategy. School administrators typically monitor student reports for failing grades, and this grade would raise red flags. Yet if it didn't, Lucas would be well within his rights to speak to the principle and request a review, and David certainly had no justification for the failing grade. This disparity would be very suspicious and cause the principle to review Lucas' work, possibly giving him the "A" to keep him happy without questioning the merits as closely as David originally did. Another grade, like a "B" or "B+" would annoy Lucas while also being anodyne enough that the administrators would not look into it even if Lucas complained.
