On the shuttle to the monolith, Dr. Floyd is shown some topographical maps of the excavation site. They indicate a large bowl shape around it, which is also described to him by one of the scientists. But in the dig-site scenes there is nothing but flat terrain, with only boulders and hillocks sprouting up here and there.
