When Sméagol/Gollum have a discussion while the Hobbits are asleep, he can be seen from one angle as Sméagol and from the other angle as Gollum. When Sméagol puts his hands above his ears, Gollum does not have his hands up to his ears. Since the state of Sméagol/Gollum is psychological, this could not happen, as can later be seen when Sméagol/Gollum is questioned by the Gondorians.
