A firefighter breaks into the school building that Kevin is in by cutting a bicycle lock on the outside of the door. But in order to lock himself inside, Kevin would have put the lock on the inside of the door (and is shown doing this on a school door earlier in the movie). However, Kevin's plan was to be apprehended, so he probably locked at least one entrance from the outside, before entering the building.
