The basilisk is referred to as a snake, and is nicknamed the Kings of Serpents. However it has eyelids, a connected mandible, and ears. All of these would indicate that the basilisk is a legless lizard, as opposed to a snake. This species is imaginary, so it can have whatever the filmmakers say it can.
