Despite the stress of the situation, it should have been incredibly obvious to Sue that she had another choice other than (1) give Marie money for Buck's escape or (2) let Matt kill Buck. The most obvious thing was to turn in Buck and Marie to the police. Even Marie should have thought of that if all she really wanted was to just save Buck from being killed by Matt. (Sure, New York had capital punishment in the 1930s, but it was pretty much only for premeditated murder.)
