During the meeting with the president's adviser, he asks how long until the Red October "will be in a position to shoot his missiles at us". Someone replies "Four days". This is incorrect. Typhoon class subs were equipped with R-39 ballistic missiles, which had a range of up to 6,000 miles. That means that most American cities, including Washington, D.C., were well within range of the Red October without it ever having to leave port in Murmansk.
