Audrey's reason for changing Derek is that he was dying and she thought she was helping him. Given that she's reluctant to change anyone -- Maurice mentions she hasn't done so in 50 years -- and she admits she's tried to kill herself rather than remain in her condition, her reason for changing Derek makes no sense. She clearly considers death a preferable alternative to being a vampire and yet she changes someone she barely knows and has no other motivation to "save."
