According to historical accounts, on the occasion of Charles's beheading, the executioner did not call out "Behold the head of a traitor!" as was customary. He simply held up the head to the crowd and dropped it to the ground. The executioner wished to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals, should the House of Stuart be restored, which it was 11 years later. Many of those involved in the King's trial were executed, and Cromwell's body was exhumed and beheaded.
