The cottage where Balfour, Breck and Stewart discover the entire family slaughtered has a vast, mauve Rhododendron bush beside it. The Rhododendron Ponticum was only first introduced to Britain in 1763, 18 years after Bonnie Prince Charlie's revolt of 1745.
