Charles discovers Josephine's diary buried in quicklime where Lady Edith has put it, supposedly to destroy it. No one wanting to destroy a diary would bury it in quicklime, rather than simply burning it. This is a clumsy and implausible plot device to allow Charles to read what's in it.
