After the jump on the carrier Davis is unable to stop and drives over the edge, dropping into the water feet first. The audience are supposed to believe that this killed him despite there being absolutely no reason for him to have been injured, much less killed, by the fall. Had they not shown such a perfect, controlled entry to the water it is possible he could have been knocked out by the fall and then drowned but not the way the stunt man lands.
