The aircraft from the USSR that attempts to intercept the satellite film held aloft by the balloon actually has the shape of a US McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II with its unique dihedral wings. MIG's or Sukhoi fighter aircraft of the 1960's also typically had nose engine air intakes, like those aircraft depicted in formation earlier in the movie. Sukhoi aircraft with shoulder air intakes were heftier than the lone aircraft in that scene and were fitted with straight swept-back wings.
