In the opening number, the baker shouts through the bakery window at his wife, "Marie! The baguettes! Hurry up!" However, the story takes place in 18th century France. The word "baguette" (meaning "wand" or "baton") was not used in France to refer to a type of bread loaf until the 1920's.
