When Indy, Sallah and all the diggers pry open the lid to the Well of Souls, we see air being sucked into the chamber beneath the lid (which would imply the chamber was sealed virtually air-tight), but once the lid is removed, we see thousands of snakes inhabiting the chamber floor. If the chamber was sealed air-tight (as the lid's removal would suggest), then the snakes could not survive inside the chamber due to lack of breathable air.
