When Lt. Nunally commits suicide we find him lying at the bottom part of the stairs with his pistol. We understand from the blood on the wall that he shot himself at the top of the stairs. Even if he rolled all the way down the stairs it is impossible for the pistol to come until next to him. Normally just after the shot pistol should fall from his hand and drop only 2-3 levels of stairs because of its weight and non-circular shape. But since it DOES stay in his hand, this must be one of those abnormal gunshots to the brain, in which his hand stays clenched for a few seconds.
