When Philip is having a key made, the guy making the key holds it against a grinding wheel and then another wheel with wire bristles, used to finish making a key. During all of this, and when he stamps the key with info, it's apparent that there are no actual cuts in the key. It's still a key-blank he's about to hand to Philip.
