In the final shootout, both NIck and Merrimen, are seen reloading their empty guns. After inserting a new magazine Merrimen is seen releasing the slide of his weapon by using the rear side of his shoe's sole. With a bullet in his right side, this would be a way to load an unloaded gun using only one hand.
But since the slide is already in the rear position and looked there, all he needs to do is releasing the slide catch and the gun would be ready to fire. And in fact, with the next clip he is doing it right this.
