"A light-year is a measurement of distance (the distance light travels in one year), not of time, so referring to one's technology being "light-years ahead of ours" doesn't make any sense."
The phrase "light-years ahead of us" is a common phrase to describe something which is more advanced than what we are used to. A light-year ahead of someone is far ahead, hence the phrase indicating that something is far ahead of what a society currently has. Claiming this as a goof is like claiming someone using the phrase "they dropped the ball" is a goof when there was no ball in the scene.
