Russia is refereed to in the series, yet name "Russia" did not exist in the period the show takes place. The Norse would have refereed to it as "GarðarÃki" (Realm of Farms). In fact, the most widely held theory of the origin of of the word "Russia" is that it came from vikings native to Roslagen, in Sweden, who became rulers in the area.
