Gandalf says of the door to the mines of Moria that it mirrors only starlight and moonlight, implying that it is not visible during the day time with light from the sun (or indeed any other light source).However, apart from the fact that all light is identical in nature (electromagnetic waves/photons, etc, varying just in frequency and/or intensity), moonlight is just reflected sunlight and the sun itself is a star, hence emits 'starlight'.
