In episodes such as The Andy Griffith Show: Barney and the Choir and The Andy Griffith Show: Rafe Hollister Sings, it is firmly established that Barney cannot sing very well and is often "off key". However, in other episodes where Andy and Barney are singing while working or sitting on Andy's front porch, Barney sings "on key".
