When Scott is handcuffed in Paxton's police car, he needs to put the suit's helmet on to shrink in size. However earlier in the film, when the ants enlarge the suit in his cell, the helmet is not connected to the rest of the suit and therefore shouldn't grow. But the unoccupied suit's behavior is not necessarily the same as its effects on an occupant. So the suit could change size successfully while separated, while still NOT being safe for Scott to change without the helmet.
