Kylo Ren placing his helmet on ashes was actually taken from a different scene, earlier in the film, and only inserted into his interrogation of Rey during editing. Evidence of this can be seen in the final cut of the film. When Kylo Ren takes off his mask, he holds it in his right hand as he approaches Rey. In the close-up of him putting it down, however, he puts it down with his left hand.
