During the opening credits, a box containing what the children would eventually find over time in the knot of a tree showed a single medal, which is supposed to be a child's medal for winning a spelling bee. This medal appears to be from the Patriotic Order Sons of America. This is the only time this medal is seen. During the film, Jem finds a medal that has a very different design. This is the spelling bee medal he later shows to Scout.
