When Bard first approaches Erebor there is a deep moat under the bridge and can be seen to have a line of ice at the bottom this is seen again when the Dwarves block off the bridge by destroying the statue. Then when Bilbo escapes later that night the entire moat is filled to the brim with out showing any sign of running water.
