While watching a newsreel of Adolf Hitler, Princess Elizabeth asks Bertie what Hitler is saying; he replies that he doesn't know. Bertie's mother, Queen Mary of Teck, was German, and his great-grandfather Prince Albert was German. While Bertie may have been trying to shield Princess Elizabeth from Hitler's rhetoric, the fact is that he, his siblings, and their parents were fluent in German.
