When Major Penderton mounts Firebrand he has no open wounds or open scars on his face. However when the panicky horse runs wild; Penderton is now showing a bloody wound on his cheekbone and forehead although up to that point in the film nothing was shown to cause it. He did not yet hit a branch or brushed up against a tree or anything else. Additionally, there were no sounds of Penderton hitting any objects before you first see the blood.
