At the beginning, when Pruitt saves the kids, he says "I'll buy you a tire, my treat" toward the end when he reunites with the kids at the hospital after smashing the windshield, he tells him he'll pay for the windshield but Dawson will charge them $50 for the tire. As the smashed window happens after Pruitt saves the kids and before he becomes a fugitive however, he can only afford to pay for his own damage and therefore must renege on his promise.
