After Capt. Mancuzo joins Ramius aboard Red October and they are being pursued by the Alpha sub, where it fires one torpedo, the Red October is nearly four thousand yards away. Capt. Ramius attempts to counter this by turning into the torpedo's path (course 315) and close the distance before it had a chance to arm itself. At that range, however, Ramius was far enough away that the oncoming torpedo was already armed and would have destroyed Red October and her crew.
