Ted Vanderway is a Navy Lieutenant who is also a Naval Aviator but on his uniform he is not showing Naval Aviator wings in which all pilots would be wearing otherwise they would be considered what is called 'out of uniform'. He also only shows one ribbon which is the National Defense Medal. Being a Navy Lieutenant he would have already been in for at least four years so he would likely have several other awards and/or ribbons.
