(at around 1h 50 mins) A reveal at the end of the film is that Captain Carol Danvers' call sign (nickname) as a fighter pilot was "Avenger." While this serves as a plot mechanism to explain how the Avengers were named, Danvers would not have realistically received such a call sign. First, call signs are almost always pejorative, for instance based on something unwise a new pilot may have done or said. Second, being one of a very few female fighter pilots in the 1980s (prior to the 1991 Tailhook naval aviation sexual harassment scandal), Danvers would have almost certainly received a call sign related to her gender in an unflattering way. Either way, "Avenger" would never happen unless there was a story behind it that did not reflect well on her.Since we see very little of Carol Danvers' time as an Air Force pilot, there is no reason to assume that no such story exists. There's nothing inherently pejorative about Maria Rambeau's call sign, "Photon", either. What makes a person's call sign meaningful comes from the story behind it, not merely the word used, and we aren't given any information about the stories behind Danvers' and Rambeau's call signs.
