When Connor is impaled by the Kurgen on their first acquaintance, the Kurgen's sword clearly enters from the left hand side of Connor's ribcage, below his extended arm. He then lies on the ground clutching a bloody wound on his right hand side, while his left side appears clean and unscathed. When the plot cuts forward to Connor on his death bed, the blood stains on his bandages imply a frontal sword wound to the sternum area of the chest.
