When Damien goes to Martin's house to ask for use of plane they don't believe it's Damien. If they had gotten their own son through the shedding process, they would have believed him right away. Damien wouldn't of had to being the evidence (old deed) out. The wife wouldn't have wanted to call the police either if they wanted to keep their son's existence so secretive.
