It's shown that after the guys put up a wall to block off the stairway, their living quarters upstairs was still not furnished. So it would follow that all the stuff brought up thereafter would have to fit through the ducts, which would be impossible with beds, furniture, various appliances, etc.The mall montage scenes in which they loot the stores occur before the wall is finished. Although not shown, that does not mean that the survivors didn't bring furniture to the back area, and set it up later after the mall was secure.
