When the rocks roll into the swamp and rise to the surface to create a new walkway to replace the collapsed bridge, their surfaces are still wet with bog water when Sarah and the rest cross over them. However, their shoes or feet have apparently not been forever tainted by the stench as a result. Hoggle's exact words are, "...if you so much as set a foot in the Bog of Stench," which implies that a foot or other body part must be submerged in order to be tainted.
