Bain is holding the black arrow in his left hand when Smaug first smashes the bell tower. When Bard goes to haul him back while he's hanging off the ledge, Bain is holding on to the tower by that left hand and the arrow is in his right. When lying on the floor of the tower, the arrow is back in his left hand.
