After being sealed in Moria by the lake monster, Gandalf uses both hands to bring a light to his staff. He is hat less. The next shot is a rear shot as the party begins their trek through the "long dark of Moria". In this shot, Gandalf's hat is still missing. In the next shot he is wearing it again. As he used both hands to light the staff he could not have been carrying it.
