In the opening sequence, when Simon Phoenix informs John Spartan that the latter is standing in gasoline, Spartan reacts surprised, as if he thought it was water or something. That amount of gasoline would give off quite a strong smell, making it obvious that it was gasoline or a similar flammable liquid. The stack of leaking gasoline drums a few metres away is another giveaway. It's hard to believe John Spartan would have failed to notice what he was standing in.
