The hand held device used by Col Stuart to communicate with the control tower is actually a 20hz, sound-powered telephone (nomen, AN/TA-1/PT) used for many years by the US military to troubleshoot tactical telephone lines. The maximum transmission range is no more the 1 mile using only physical wires.
