The Natal Native Contingent soldiers were not frightened away by the ravings of a pastor, but by the arrival of 3,000 to 4,000 Zulu warriors. Knowing that if the defenses were to be overrun (which was a near certainty) they would be killed as traitors, so they left en masse.
