In presenting all the offers by the various networks Michael Ovitz tells Letterman that ABC will only offer him a show at midnight due to the fact that they want to keep Nightline on in its 11:30 PM time slot. In reality, however, ABC did offer Letterman 11:30 and offered to bump Nightline to 12:30 AM, which many felt would lead to the Nightline being canceled. Letterman's producer Peter Lassally told him to turn that deal down fearing the negative publicity that would of accused Letterman of pushing Ted Koppel off the air. Only after voicing their concerns to ABC did they offer him a midnight show.
