With the story set in 1932, the "ham" costume Mary Badham (Scout) wore was clearly made from fiberglass, not paper mache.
Fiberglass was invented in 1932-1933 by Russell Games Slayter of Owens-Corning, as a material to be used as thermal building insulation.
The first commercial production of glass fiber was in 1936.
I seriously doubt that anyone in Maycomb, Alabama would have had access to fiberglass at that time.
