Towards the end of the movie when the Time Machine is struck by lightning it sends Dr. Brown back to the wild west despite not traveling at 88 mph. If the lightning is all that is needed Marty would never of had to drive towards the cable in the first movie he could have sat in the Time Machine with it connected to the cable waiting for the lightning strike. However, Doc Brown and Marty didn't try this because they were unaware it would work, it was 1955 Doc Brown who used the clock tower lightning, he doesn't invent the time machine for nearly 30 years. This is evidenced by Marty being clearly convinced the lightning vapourized the Delorean and killed 1985 Doc Brown (and being ecstatic when he discovers the truth).
