In wide shots of St. Peter's Square from atop the colonnade, light fixtures of the type commonly used in film and video are plainly visible between the statues. While this type of fixture can kick out a pretty intense light up close or in a studio, it wouldn't be very practical trying to light a large area like St. Peter's Square with them.
