Alvin Karpis was the last big-time gangster to be caught, not Machine Gun Kelly. Karpis did not vow to kill J. Edgar Hoover for killing Ma Barker as he had already parted ways with the Barkers. While Hoover did fly to New Orleans, he did not arrest Karpis on the streets. Instead, Karpis was in his car, which was swarmed by FBI agents before he could start it. Hoover came in after Karpis was secured, according to numerous newspaper accounts from reporters and eyewitnesses at the scene.
