The sinking of the ship Carmania is obviously a plot device to get Ann to the cottage where she will be confronted by former love Barlow posing as Matthewson. However, for the spies to contrive the shipwreck as a diversion for their people-smuggling activities is clearly unrealistic since it brought the Police, RNLI and other emergency services to the very location of their operations.
