Actually it was the GOLD MEDAL OF HONOR. Signed by Assistant Secretary Charles D Hilles on July 15, 1910. I have a picture of the medal and the letter. The letter states he is receiving the honor for the heroic and daring actions of saving seven fisherman from drowning at Venice, Ocean Park, California. This medal is also referred to as the Life Saving Medal. It is gold medal issued by act of congress. It is a specific medal for lifesaving acts from perils of the sea. It is one of the oldest congressional medals. The US Treasury delivered these medals until the US Coast Guard took over the honor more recently. So, it is a Gold Medal of Honor issued by an act of congress. There is also a silver medal. However, it is not the Congressional Gold Medal of Honor that we think of Bob Hope receiving.
