On average, it takes approximately three to five years to earn a black belt in karate. Daniel (by his own admission) has taken a couple of classes at the YMCA and read a book on karate. Mr. Miyagi begins teaching him just after Halloween (so sometime in early November). The All-Valley Tournament takes place on December 19th. Even if Daniel trained non-stop, there is no way he should have been able to hold his own in a tournament against people who had been training in karate for years.
