Aethelred never gave up his claim in favor of Alfred. He did favor Alfred as his successor because Aethelred's own son was an infant at the time he died. In fact Aethelwulf had five sons with Aethelred being number 4 and Alfred number 5. Aethelred famously died from wound he sustained fighting the Great Heathen Army together with Alfred.
